Intelligent Edge Raspberry Pi cluster

Pi enthusiasts interested in building a Raspberry Pi cluster may be interested in a new project published to the Hackster.io website this week by Dave Glover. Who provides full instructions on how to build a Kubernetes Intelligent Edge Raspberry Pi cluster using a selection of Raspberry Pi 4 and 3 Model B mini PCs. Kubernetes (commonly stylised as k8s) is an open-source container-orchestration system for automating application deployment, scaling, and management. It was originally designed by Google, and is now maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

The Raspberry Pi cluster is built using the official Raspbian Raspberry Pi operating system and is classed as an intermediate level project taking approximately two hours to complete. As well as the mini PCs you will also need two Pimoroni Blinkt LED strips. Glover explains a little more about the project and what you will learn in the process.

“Building a Kubernetes Intelligent Edge cluster on Raspberry Pi is a great learning experience, a stepping stone to building robust Intelligent Edge solutions, and an awesome way to impress your friends. Skills you develop on the edge can be used in the cloud with Azure Kubernetes Service.

The Kubernetes cluster is built with Raspberry Pi 4 nodes and is very capable. It has been tested with Python and C# Azure Functions,Azure Custom Vision Machine Learning models, and the NGINX Web Server. This project forms the basis for a four-part Intelligence on the Edge series. The followup topics will include: Build, debug, and deploy Python and C# Azure Functions to a Raspberry Pi Kubernetes Cluster, and learn how to access hardware from a Kubernetes managed container.”
