STORY
This project showcases how to use the Scanse Sweep scanning LiDAR sensor to make 3D scans of environments. We designed this project for those looking to test Sweep’s indoor/outdoor scanning capabilities in their applications.
This project was inspired by our observation that the high price of 3D scanners was prohibiting their use in commercial and consumer applications. We believe there is a lot of opportunity for using this device in the areas of digital art, building information scanning, outdoor terrain scanning and virtual reality environment creation.
The scanner is designed to primarily mount to a tripod and operate while stationary. It takes about 2-10 minutes to complete a scan depending on the scan settings and desired resolution. It can be used to record several adjacent scans, which can be stitched together in our desktop visualizer application, and then exported as a single scan. For example, the video above, is the result of combining 4 separate scans that each took around 4 min.
We will be posting a full set of assembly instruction here soon. In the mean time, you can 3D print the attached part files and purchase the components on the parts list.
